CP Baseball Weekend Rundown

Tyler Beede (Vandelbilt) threw 7 scoreless innings against #3 Kentucky in a game that Vandy would go on to win 4-3.

Sahil Bloom (Stanford) threw 5 scoreless innings against UCLA to earn a win.  Bloom: 5IP, 2H, 0ER, 0BB

Mike Yastrzemski (Vandelbilt U.) went 3-4 at the plate in Vandy’s 6-1 win over #3 ranked Kentucky.  Recap

Steve Cishek (Miami Marlins) earned a win on Saturday with a scoreless inning of relief against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Steve has an impressive 0.96ERA so far in 2012.

Bryan LaHair (Chicago Cubs) continues to impress offensively, going 3-4 at the plate in Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.  Box

CP Baseball Community Highlights from Thursday’s games:

Tim Collins (Royals) was impressive in two innings of work against the Cleveland Indians, escaping a bases-loaded/no-outs jam, allowing just a sacrifice fly.  Tim’s final line: 2IP, 1H, 1BB, 0ER  Royals Recap

Ryan Flaherty (Orioles) had his first (and second) hit in a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.  Ryan finished the day 2-3 with his first RBI.  Recap

Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox) went 3-4 with a grand slam, contributing to the Red Sox recent offensive resurgence.  Kevin’s line: 3-4, 1HR, 4RBI, 2RS  Red Sox Recap

Jeremiah Bayer (Red Sox High A) was solid again in relief: 2IP, 1H, 0ER  Recap

Mike Dowd (Seattle A) went 2-5 at the plate, with 1RBI.

CP Baseball Community Highlights from Tuesday’s games:

Bryan LaHair (Cubs 1B) hit his fourth HR of the season, scoring the only Cubs run in a 5-1 loss to the Cardinals. Video

Travis Dean (Kennesaw State U.)  earned his third win of the season, allowing 5 hits and two earned runs in five innings of work.  Kennesaw beat Savannah State 9-4.  Recap

Nick Friar (Northwestern U.) touched 90mph for the first time in his career: 5IP and 1R. Recap

Max Tishman (Lawrence Academy) threw a complete-game shutout with 16 strikeouts. Recap

John Andreoli (Cubs High-A) had another strong offensive outing, going 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base.  John is now hitting .341 on the season.

Will Inman (Red Sox AAA) tossed a scoreless inning of relief: 1IP, 0R, 1K.  Will’s stats

Murphy Smith & Shawn Haviland (A’s AA) combine for a win/save for the second time this season.  Murphy and Shawn led the Midland RockHounds to a 9-3 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks.  Box Score

Dan Cellucci (Lincoln-Sudbury HS) went 3-4 with 3 RBI and David McCullough (Lincoln-Sudbury HS) threw 6 innings of scoreless baseball, leading L-S to a 9-3 victory over Concord-Carlisle.

Greg Hemmer threw 9 shutout innings for Framingham, only to see his team lose a hard-fought game to Framingham in 11 innings.  Recap

LaHair’s Late-Game Heroics & More

CP Baseball Community Highlights from Tuesday’s games:

Bryan LaHair contributed late-game heroics for the second straight evening, hitting a game-tying solo HR in the bottom of the ninth inning.  The Cubs ultimately went on to win 3-2 in ten innings.  Bryan finished the night 2-4 with a HR and a walk.  Check out the video of Bryan’s big opposite field drive here.

Tim Collins tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in a tough 4-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians.  Tim has held his opponents scoreless in 7 of his 8 appearances in 2012.  Tim’s ESPN Player Profile

Kevin Youkilis went 2-4 with a pair of singles in the Red Sox 11-2 victory over the Twins.  Box Score

Jeremy Hazelbaker (Boston AA) had a strong offensive showing: 2-3, 2BB, R, RBI in a tough 7-6 loss.

Scott Weismann (Cubs AA) made his double-A debut: 3IP, 0R in AA debut – and went 1-1 at the plate!

Charlie Butler (Nashoba HS) tossed a complete game shutout in s 1-0 win over Marlborough HS.  Charlie’s line was certainly impressive: 14K, 5H Read the complete game recap here.

LaHair Sparks Late Rally & More Highlights

Have a look at the highlights from the CP professional baseball community on Monday:

Bryan LaHair sparked a two-run winning rally for the Chicago Cubs by earning a hard-fought (12-pitches) walk against hard-throwing Cardinals closer, Jason Motte.  Read more here.

Richard Sullivan (Atlanta AA) threw 2.1 innings of 1-hit/3K scoreless relief for the Birmingham Braves.  Box Score

John Andreoli went 1-2 with 2BB.  John is now hitting .342 with a .479 OBP (1st in FL St League)

Jimmy Gillheeney earned his 3rd win (3-0/1.29 ERA) for the High Desert Mavericks (Seattle High-A): Box Score

John Pedrotty (Arizona A) earned his first win of year: 6IP, 0R, 5H, 1BB, 5K

Mike Dowd goes 2-3 with a BB and run scored for the Clifton LumberKings (Seattle A): Box Score

Solid Performances from CP Athletes of All Ages…

On Tuesday, Cressey Performers accomplished great things on the baseball field at all competitive levels:

-  Steve Cishek earned a win with one inning of scoreless relief (1k) against Bryan LaHair’s Chicago Cubs.  Brian contributed to the offensive effort with an RBI in a 1-for-2 effort, including one walk.  Read the complete game recap here.

-  Tim Collins struck out the only batter he faced after entering a 2-out, runners on first and second base situation.  Unfortunately for Tim, the Royals lost for the sixth consecutive time against the Tigers.

-  Jeremy Hazelbaker (Red Sox AA) went 1-for-3 with a home run in the Portland Sea Dogs 6-3 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats.  Read the game recap here.

-  Corey Kluber (Inadians AAA) extended his starting record to 3-0 with another solid performance against the Columbus Clippers.  Corey went six innings, allowing a single run on six hits.  Recap here.

-  In local high school baseball, CP athlete Ryan Venditti went eight innings, striking out 10 and scattering four hits.  Ryan also scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth, leading Westborough to a victory over Westford in a non-league matchup.

CP Minor League Roundup

Monday was another productive day of baseball for CP’s minor league guys.  With over 60 CP alums in action, a few highlights included:

-  Cory Riordan pitched 3.2 innings of solid relief to earn a win for the Tulsa Drillers over visiting Corpus Christi.  Cory’s performance included 4H, 1R, 1ER and 4Ks. Complete Box Score.

-  Jeremy Hazelbaker put together a 2-for-5 performance for the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox AA-Affiliate).  Jeremy had 1RBI in the 10-5 extra innings loss.  Complete Box Score.

Smith and Haviland Combine for 3H victory

Cressey Performance Athletes Murphy Smith and Shawn Haviland combined for a 3 hit, 3-2 victory for Oakland AA Affiliate, the Midland RockHounds.  Murphy (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.  Shawn covered the final three innings, allowing a single hit and no runs.  Shawn earned the first save of his professional career.
